In Memoriam: Ramona Moon

(She/her)

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Christine Hayes, known to many as Ramona Moon, on January 5, 2024. A trailblazer in the arts and a beloved figure, Christine left an indelible mark on the world.

Her journey, from being crowned Ms. Ohio State Fair at the age of 6 to her influential role in the San Francisco hippie movement, reflects the extraordinary tapestry of her life. Christine's talents spanned the realms of Montessori teaching, playwriting, acting, artistry, and social activism. She was a pioneer in creating collaged art from recycled materials, with her iconic art cars making waves in the art scene.

Christine's legacy extends beyond her artistic pursuits. Her contributions to consciousness-raising experiments at the Esalen Institute and her impactful role as a Montessori teacher showcase the depth of her commitment to personal growth and education.

A traveler at heart, Christine's adventures took her from Morocco to Jamaica, leaving a trail of inspiration in her wake. Her return to Columbus in the late '90s marked the beginning of new artistic endeavors, including organizing Columbus' first art car show.

In her later years, Christine continued to be a force in the literary world, co-authoring books on Columbus' history and contributing to various publications.

For those wishing to make a contribution, Bread & Puppet Theater and The Nature Conservancy were causes dear to her.

As we bid farewell to this remarkable soul, let us celebrate Christine's life with the same vibrancy and love she shared with the world. May she rest in peace, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations to come.
